Bush Explorations Africa is owned, led and operated by John Dixon. I am based in the Lowveld in the beautiful Limpopo Province of South Africa. Bush Explorations Africa offices are in the quaint Village of Kampersrus, just below the Klein (small) Drakensberg Mountains, close to Hoedspruit the Safari Town, fondly called "The Hood".
My mission is simple: Take our Guests and their Families and Friends, on routes diverse and stunning, layered with excitement & wildlife experiences. I will follow Ancient paths, showcasing true Traditional Cultural places and its people steeped with African History and hugely varied Scenery, discovering much more than the standard Safari experience. This I do by taking the roads less travelled, ensuring that sufficient time is built into the Safari Trip to do so. MEET
JOHN DIXON
John was born in Durban, Natal in 1962. His formative years were spent growing up in Matabele-land in the then Southern Rhodesia. JD’s main passion is photography and filming, African history, traditions and culture of its peoples. JD is a fully qualified NFQ level 4 VPDA guide, with all relevant licences.
With a passion for all things wild, “JD”… as he is known in the safari industry, grew to live his passion out by starting in the safari & tourism industry in the Sabi Sands reserve in 1979, this as a junior “dog’s body” at the formation of the original Sabi Sabi, interspersed with farming projects and military service.
JD spent time immersing himself in taking out guests & visitors on safaris and bush walks. Assisting on game capture operations, setting up leopard research programmes, elephant research, training of field and operational staff, consulting on many development projects in diverse areas and regions, from the Southern African SADEC countries and West Africa Nigeria with the Mantis Collection, from reserves and lodge and camp operations, movie and documentary film shoots, events and launches. Sales and marketing shows to the tourism industry.
Having been fortunate to have spent time at some of the world’s best operations and worked with the top and finest of rangers, trackers and field guides, JD uses only owner led and managed camps with whom he has worked personally. Many of these people are firm friends from Sabi Sabi, Londolozi, Ngala Lodge, Thornybush, the old Khoka Moya Manyeleti, Entabeni and Legend Lodges in the Waterberg, Africa On Foot & Nthambo Tree Camp Klaserie Private Reserve, Walkers River Camp Timbavati, Tuskers And Xcobega Island in Botswana.
JD is able to make your expedition work with your budget and to maximise the experience with over 35 years of expertise, advice and by using the right camps and reserves, wilderness areas, at the correct seasons, with the proper equipment and 4 x 4 vehicles.
A safari expedition with JD is an experience you will not forget. Many of JD’s guests are return visitors with epic and amazing bush tales to tell.
